Detroit News Teen Battle of the Bands 2008 - March 1st through May 16th.
Entry Deadline/Submissions/Nominations ended March 22nd.
March 31st to May 10th: Voting on Entries, weekly eliminations. Winner Announced May 16th.
Annual Competition for 13 to 18 year olds who are in Metro Detroit bands of all genres. This high profile annual competition takes place in Detroit. Over $10,000 worth of prizes. Wall of Denial won in 2005, The Red Rocks in 2006, The Displays in 2007.

Sing-a-Jing Contest - $10,000 in prizes. Contest ends May 10th, 2008. Enter a videotape or your child (ages 5 to 11, in Michigan and Ohio) singing the Hansons Jingle. You can also Watch & Vote for your favorite singer.

Jazz Caf Discovery Series - 1st Annual Talent Search - at Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit. A year long search for Detroit's best and freshest new talent. Musicians who perform in the series beginning in September 2007, will be eligible for the Jazz Caf Discovery Award, which will be awarded in July of 2008. Jazz, Blues and R&B Performers are all encouraged to participate. The Discovery Award winner will receive a $5,000 grant from the Music Hall, a live recording of their Jazz Caf appearance and a performance berth at the 2008 Detroit International Jazz Festival.

Great Lakes Songwriting Contest 2008 - Annual Competition is open to songwriters currently living in the eight Great Lakes states and the Province of Ontario. Contest welcomes all types of music. Country, rock, Christian and Gospel, blues, hip-hop, folk, instrumental, and all the hybrids. We don't make you pick a category when you enter your songs. Grand Prize winner will be awarded $2,000 cash, two first-place winners will each get a $500 gift certificate for Elderly Instruments, four second-place winners will each get a $200 Elderly Instruments gift certificate, and four third-place winners will each get a $100 Elderly Instruments gift certificate. More prizes will be added between now and the contest deadline. All rights to songs will remain with the entrants.

Annual, 2008 Date TBA: Detroit Fireworks Super Singer Contest - Annual competition where five singers are chosen to sing *LIVE* on the TV Local 4/WDIV FIREWORKS broadcast. Auditions in 2007 were April 20th & 21st. fireworks always held around the last wednesday in June.

TBA 2008 (July): Detroit News Sonic Summer: A Battle of the Bands - in Metro Detroit. Last year Entry Deadline was July 13th. Contest was open to band members 18 + and who reside in the state of Michigan, original material only. The winning band from each semi-final will advance to battle it out at the finals during the Chrysler Arts, Beats & Eats festival in Pontiac on August 31st.

August 2, 2008: Riverfolk Fiddle Contest - in Manchester (a little southwest of Ann Arbor). Old-Time Fiddle Contest with three divisions, Entry Deadline is July 30th, Contestant Fees $5 to $15.

Annual, 2008 Date TBA: Talent Search (July or August). Can you sing, dance, play an instrument or have another talent? Wade Shows, together with Party Time Entertainment hosted Talent Search 2007 at the Wayne County fairgrounds.

Annual, 2008 Date TBA: Annual Michigan State Championship Old-Time Fiddlers Contest - 22nd contest was Oct. 6, 2007 in New Boston. It's part of the Huron Township Applefest, $10 entry fee.

November 1, 2008: Michigan Competing Band Association State Championship Contest - Annually in November, held at Ford Field in Detroit. 40 High School Marching bands, Drum & Bugle Corps style bands in four MCBA Flights of Competition.

Sphinx Competition January 28 - February 1, 2009 in Ann Arbor and Detroit.
Annual classical music competition. "Open to all Junior High, High School, and College age Black and Latino string players residing in the U.S., offering young Black and Latino classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with established professional musicians in a competition setting."

William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition March 7, 2009 Finals in Flint.
"Young artists from throughout the world compete for a grand prize of $6,000 plus an opportunity to perform with the Flint Symphony Orchestra. Held annually on the first Saturday of March, competition is sponsored by the St. Cecilia Society in collaboration with the Flint Institute of Music and the Flint Symphony Orchestra." Competition rotates annually between four disciplines.



National and International Music Competitions & Contests

U.S.A. World Showcase in Spring 2008 - May 24th. Unsigned Artists Talent and Singing Competition. Competitors perform in front of a live audience on the USA main stage in Las Vegas. Cash and Prizes up to $100,000.00 voted 100%, on the internet, by the broadcast viewers. Singers will also win Demo Recording Sessions and CD distribution. Broadcast Contestants receive a professional dvd of their personal performances.

The John Lennon Songwriting Contest 2008 - international contest with over $330,000 in cash and prizes. The JLSC is open year-round, open to amateur and professional songwriters, and features two Sessions with 72 Finalists, 24 Grand Prize Winners, 12 Lennon Award Winners and 1 Maxell Song of the Year. Your songs may be entered in any of the following 12 categories: Rock, Country, Jazz, Pop, World, Rhythm & Blues, Hip Hop, Gospel/Inspirational, Latin, Electronic, Folk, and Children's. Instrumental compositions are encouraged.

Song of the Year - Song & Lyric Competition 2008 - Monthly and Yearly Prizes. Annual contest whose "primary focus is to find great songwriters while helping them network with professionals in the music industry. 600 monthly winners and finalists throughout the year will get their music sent to Record Labels, Music Publishers, management and more. The judging panel consists of producers, labels, professional musicians, songwriters, managers, agents, A&R representatives, publisher representatives, and many others that have displayed success in their profession. American Accordionists' Association 2008 Competition - August 13-17, in Washington DC.
International Entertainment Competition. Accordion contestants from the U.S., China, Russia, Canada, Mexico, France and Italy compete for cash prizes and a grand prize. (2005 competition was held at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, MI)

[TBA 2009]: International Blues Challenge - 24th IBC was January 31 through February 2, 2008 in Memphis, TN. "The IBC represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations (mostly blues societies) for the Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to perform on a national stage, but just need that extra break." It's the largest gathering of blues bands in the world.

[TBA 2009]: SXSW (South by Southwest Music Conference) - 21st Annual was March 12-16, 2008. South by Southwest Music and Media Conference (SXSW), Austin Music Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas. This is HUGE. "Over 1400 acts showcased last year before more than 8000 registrants from all over the world. Pop, jazz, country, blues, reggae, hip hop, electronica - every imaginable style of music, from nearly every continent - is represented each night at over 50 of Austin's premier stages, many within walking distance of one another."

Nashville Star 2008 - now on NBC TV - Submission Deadline was March 10th. TV show & Country Music singing competition starts airing June 9th. "We're casting honky-tonk heroes, singing sensations, and performing prodigies who are at least 16 years old and there’s no upper-age limit. This year the competition is also open to singing duos and trios. Country singers compete for the musical opportunity of a lifetime… a major-label record deal and a chance to represent your country on the world's stage at the 2008 Olympic Games."
